Does the government try to make life difficult?

    <lj:music>None - I'm watching 30 Rock</lj:music>

May I please take a moment to tell you how much I hate the government? Now, some of this may come as common knowledge to you, but I had no idea...

I had to get my driver's license renewed this week because of my birthday (that is not new information to me). I got out of work late, all sweaty and gross and really really needed a shower. I ran home, showered, and sped to the DMV (in a huge downpour - yet managed to keep my hair dry for my picture). I got there 10 minutes before close. I go through the entire renewal process (right before my picture) and realize that they don't take plastic as a form of payment. In my rush to get there, I didn't realize that I didn't have $25 on me - or my checkbook. Luckily they had an ATM I could use, but it charged me $4.50 altogether since it wasn't 5/3. I was mad about the fee, but whatever. I just don't understand why they can't take plastic!

Today I went to the Sheriff's Dept to get fingerprinted for my teaching license and possible part time teaching job. I thought about getting cash, but I had no idea how much it would cost (I was thinking anywhere between $20 and $100), and I knew they sometimes close at 4 (I get off work at 3, and the drive from work to Sheriff's Dept is about 45 min). I figured I would stick with the plastic and checkbook...and I could use an ATM or nearby bank if necessary. I get to the building and see a sign that says "Cash only. No credit/debit cards or personal checks." FML So I go inside and ask the lady where the nearest bank is (they don't have an ATM of course), and she says downtown Batavia - which is like 5 minutes or so, but seems like forever. Luckily, they don't close til 6 on Thursdays, though. So I left the office and head 'downtown' (downtown is really just 2 streets with 4 banks, a UDF, and 2 pizza places). The ATM was closed, so I went inside and withdrew $100 (I forgot to ask how much the fingerprints/background check cost). I get back to the Sheriff's Dept and the lady says that it's $50. I start to hand her 3 $20s (the banker gave me 5 $20s), and the lady points to some fine print on a second sign - "Exact Cash Only. No change given." FML So now what do I do? I turn around to the waiting area and ask everyone at once if anyone has change for a $20. Of course no one does, so I sigh and walk back out the door. I walk next door to the court office, where I am greeted by the security guy. I explain my situation, and he says he's not allowed to give change, and he can't let me in just for that. So I walk back to my car, drive back to "downtown" Batavia and put $10 of gas into my car so that I can make change (and my gas tank was nearly empty anyway). I drive back to the Sheriff's Dept where the receptionist greets me with a huge grin and asks if I'm ready "this time." I about told her to fuck off, but that's not nice. So I pull out all my cash....20s, 5s, and 1s and make sure that the amount really is $50. I count it all out, hand it over, and get my form to fill out. I fill out the form, wait literally 2 minutes, get fingerprinted (which took about 2 minutes - only because I had to correct the spelling of my name because the other receptionist could not type what she read on my driver's license), and left. It took me 45 minutes to get money, get gas, etc for a freaking 4 minute event. I was so pissed. Why can't they take plastic?! Or even a check?!

In a world like today, why can't plastic be a widely-accepted form of payment? I know that credit card companies charge fees for places who accept credit cards, but I don't care - it's a commonly used form of payment and should be accepted since it's the freakin 21st century. And if you're not going to accept plastic, at least have an ATM in your store/building or offer change to your customers. The receptionist is behind a huge glass window, surrounded by security cameras and sheriffs. So what if she has a drawer of like $40 worth of change? What's really going to happen to her? Will she be forced to be nice and provide change to someone? And if someone is stupid enough to try something violent, I'm sure he will be taken care of by all the sheriffs around.

And that is why I hate the government. Thank you.

Tomorrow will be the end of my first week at preschool. I know that more will happen in the following weeks, but I love it so far!! I love the kids, no matter how bratty they are and how many times they slap me in the face. I've been slapped, punched, kicked, and yelled at, but I am still bruise-free!
This week has been so eventful. Tuesday was the first mandatory staff meeting in a very long time. I didn't get anything out of it, but it was nice to see how organized the place is. We had picture day on Wednesday, so I'll be in the class picture (yay!). Then today was show-and-tell and tomorrow is pajama day! :) Plus every Friday our class gets the tv so that we can watch a movie before lunch. I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not, but it's a great way to spend an hour and a half if the kids behave.

Christy is moving back soon! Hooray! I can't wait to see her in person and know that she's real. I hate thinking that she only lives in my computer.

Not much else is happening.
I have to decide by the end of the month if I want to stay here or move. I would love to live closer to work, but it's way more expensive up in Mason/Landen. I'm not sure if it's worth it.
Next weekend I'm going to Troy. YAY! I may work on Friday night for "parents night out" at preschool, but on Saturday I will be headed up to Troy. Mom and I are going to see the Dayton Ballet on Sunday. I forget what the performance is, but mom got 2 tickets for her birthday - Dad bought them for us since he'll be in Paris. Karen's birthday is also Sunday, so hopefully we can go drinking in Troy on Saturday night to celebrate. Troy has like 5 bars spread around the town, but I think we'll have fun. I'm not sure who else is in Troy right now, but we have a few people lined up. I can't wait to see everyone!
I have seen more dead geese in the past week that in my entire life. I had no idea that they were so stupid!!
And I need to catch up on Desperate Housewives. I'm thinking about buying all of the seasons because I just love the show so much.

Today was my last Monday at Macy's. To celebrate, I took a vacation day. hooray! I don't think my vacation days get paid when I quit, so I thought I should just use one. I have 12, afterall! I also celebrated by giving Kamikaze a bath. She's not too happy with me right now.

I've been looking at teachers-teachers.com a little. You basically upload all your information and transcripts, and you choose where you want your stuff sent to. This is different than Ohio applications, though, because you can send your information to any state that you want. Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina are always looking for teachers. I thought about moving to Florida after I graduated, but I was too scared. I didn't want to move that far away all alone, and I wasn't even sure what kind of job I wanted. Now that I've been through years of rejection in Ohio, I think I'm finally ready to move. I'm still researching the areas, but I'm ready for this. I want to see what's out there for me. I was considering FL because I've been there so many times and have loved every place I've been. Then I was considering SC because I hear it's great, and I know a girl who just moved out there. We're really not that close, but she gave me some advice, and I think I want to try it. Then I found out that Ronnie is moving to SC in a few weeks, and Sam is moving later. I'm not choosing SC because of them, but it would be really cool to know someone in the state....even if I was hours away and only saw them once a month.

I'm still starting at KidsRKids next Monday (when Macy's is officially in the Fuck It Bucket), but that kind of complicates my plan. I think I'm going to stay at my apartment (or move to Landen) and work at KRK for a year and take classes to renew my teaching licenses. Then I will update all my information on teachers-teachers.com and see what jobs I can find. I only need something like 6 or 9 credits, so I should be done with classes by the end of 2009. Then when 2010 comes around, I'll have all my stuff updated, and my lease will be ending in May. Come June 2010, maybe I will hear something back from the states I apply to, and will have a possible job for the fall. I can move all my stuff to my parents' when my lease is up, and hopefully pack again and head to wherever my new job is.

I'm really exicted for this. I just hope it all works out.

We had a Nixon house reunion last night in Hyde Park. I'd never been to Scott's new house, so it was an exciting adventure. I had way too much fun and ended up hugging the toilet before leaving though. I really miss all of them and wish we could hang out more often. A guy named Keith was there. It sounds like he is their friend from elementary school/high school, so he may be 'joining' the group now that he lives in West Chester again. I think I have chosen one of my New Year's resolutions - make more time for friends, even when I'm really busy. I just wish they didn't live 25 minutes away. :(

    <lj:music>None - I'm watching Friends (paper, snow, a ghost!)</lj:music>

I went to Amanda's on Saturday night to start my fun weekend. We went to Jefferson Hall with Sheena and then stayed at Amanda's. Sunday was Matt and Amanda's football party, so everyone showed up over there. We watched the crazy wind during the Bengals game because the power kept flickering on and off every 5 minutes. Claudia and Mike texted us around 2 to let us know that all of the west side had lost power, so they were coming over. Sheena and Matt came later because they lost power too. Claudia said that Clifton was out, and Amanda and Jeff found out that they were out of power in Fairfield. I called my house to see if the answering machine would pick up, and I was out of power too. During the football games the news was scrolling across the bottom. It said that over 660,000 homes were out of power and the winds were about 35 mph....with gusts up to 65. I don't know what it was exactly in Hebron, KY, but I know it was bad (and it was still way better than Ohio). Amanda's siding was coming off her house, and some neighbors were losing shingles. Amanda's power ended up going out for about an hour, but it was great. We listened to the wind-up radio/flashlight (thank you, Sports Illustrated!), ate a ton of food, and talked, but eventually we ran out of beer. We decided to go to a bar, but then the power came back on and the San Diego/Denver game was finishing. After the game we drove around, but all the bars and restaurants were full of people. We ended up at Gold Star, but it was still fun. The Browns/Steelers game was on around 8, so we had to eat real fast then drive back to Amanda's.

I ended up staying at Amanda's because I didn't want to come home alone to a house with no power. I called off work today because of the distance and time. All the schools between New Richmond and Indian Hill were closed (just to name a few). In KY, Campbell, Boone, and Kenton County Schools were closed too. I came home around 7 am today and still had no power. I'm glad I came home to feed Kamikaze 'cause her food was almost gone. I went back to bed because there was nothing else to do, and took a shower in the dark when I woke up. My power was back on around 2 today, and I was really happy. I was starting to worry about all of the food in my fridge. I just stocked it on Friday! Now everything is back to normal for the most part. I know that a ton of houses and businesses still have no power, but at least it's getting better. I heard that some people may be out of power for a week, but I really hope it doesn't take that long - especially for people who live alone. I don't know what I would do if I was alone in the dark for a week.

This weekend was another great one. Friday I was really tired, so I stayed home to clean....and actually stayed up til about 5 am talking to Christy. Guess I wasn't so tired afterall. Saturday I slept and went to Claudia's moving-in party. It was a very strange night full of great friends, old friends, lots of everclear (yummy!), texts from across the room, and lots of randomness...and Dora (Doora?). Sunday I woke up a little late for Claudia and Mike's football party, but I still made it before the Bengals halftime. We watched three different games, played darts, and did a LOT of laughing. I love my old married friends. :) Bengals and Colts lost, but at least the Browns did too! Ha! Today it was very hard to wake up. Not only was I tired, I was experiencing the lovely sickness that Amanda has. Claudia gave it to Amanda (I say so at least), and Amanda gave it to me. Now I guess I gotta pass it on to CKR if she doesn't have it yet. haha

At lunch today the guys had a hot sauce eating contest at Moe's. Michael ate two little cups full and Doug only got one. I wish I wasn't poor becuase I would love to eat out with them everyday. Last week the conversations were body hair (mostly male), neck rolls, malt vinegar, inappropriate body language, and the monthly drinking schedule. You never know what we're going to talk about.

I see lots of sleep in my future. Tomorrow we have the monthly department meetings. I have no idea what that means, but I am being introduced to everyone, so I have to be alert. ALERT!
